Portfolios Available for Exhibition:
- Schools for the
Colored
The current project is a survey of the places that were
connected to the system of racially segregated (broadly
defined to include Jim Crow imposed segregation, self
imposed segregated schools initiated by member of the
black community and de facto segregation) schools
established in the northern United States. My particular
interest is in the regions of the northern “free” states
that bordered the slave states (sometimes known as the
Up-South, just over the line to freedom) as regions of
unique concentrations of black settlements during the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Schools for the
Colored is the representation of my effort to memorialize
these sites. The images are 13"x20" in 22"x28" frames.
The portfolio includes 50 images.
- Village of Peace: An African
American Community in Israel African American
expatriats that settled in the southern Israeli town
of Dimona for nearly 40 years. The group, know as the
African Hebrew Israelites moved to Israel from the
Chicago area near the end of the 1960's. Twenty five
prints, framed 24"x36" and 24"x30" and available
directly from the artist.
- Small Towns, Black Lives A thirteen
year project documenting the small, historically
African American, towns and settlements of the
southern counties of New Jersey. The images are
photographic and text based narratives of the
contemporary lives and the historical traditions of
the community. The web site offers meta-documentary
evidence of my experiences and the archival materials
used for creating narratives. Seventy framed prints
ranging from 22"x30" to 22"x44", with exhibition
catalogue, signage, and educational materials. This
exhibition is only available through the oyes Museum
