Centennial of 1918 Philadelphia Race Riots

July 28, 1918 race riots in Philadelphia were part of a national series of racial conflicts that have been an ongoing aspect of the American struggle for equality and social justice. This project is concerned with the places in the American landscape where the concentration of post-war conflict occurred between 1917 and 1923, with the most significant events forming a concentrated period of time during 1919 known as Red Summer. The intersection of 20th and Federal where a black resident was shot while in police custody. The riots spread over large areas of the city.
